I think that we should opt for a REST service, more than an AJAX library. My vote is no, I'd prefer to have a simple REST API, and with it you can create AJAX requests.

I will vote yes. I have been seen myself many times writting these entities to work with models in CI. Furthermore, I don't think that ORM would be a bad practice.

IMHO, I think that since the new version would be released at least one year from now (probably more, seen what happended with CodeIgniter 3.0) there is no point on having backwards compatibility code...
