It does seem like that they are reselling netregistry
The technicians called me back and said that they couldnt find anything wrong with their mod_rewrite and pointed the finger at the framework (blasphemy!)
Looks like i will have to do some more research.

Ah finally fixed it..
I assumed that it was a problem with a specific host so i used solution 2 on this page.
http://codeigniter.com/wiki/Dreamhost_.htaccess/
changing the config['uri_protocol'] to REQUEST_URI did the trick
