Manipulate Hirigana and Katakana with javascript? tips? - El Forum - 04-30-2009

I am new to dealing with asian characters, in fact i have never done it.
That being said what are some tips you can give for doing so?
Also I am wanting to use javascript to manipulate strings of kana to change the text and manipulate the strings of kana. I have messed with it, but am totally lost on how to do it since it seems to be a lot different than doing things in english.
Any help would be great. I have quite a few things to do but know nothing about doing foreign languages while programming.
