I use SMTP on mine, haven't had any problems with it. I would say that it is a matter of personal preference.

I've had some problems with some hosts disabling the mail() function and requiring scripts to send mail out using username/password through a SMTP gateway.

Yup, unless there's a specific reason I tend to use SMTP too.
