similar to what zend framework and symfony framework has, does CI have a pear channel for easy downloading and updating on server? It really would be nice to have.

OK..... WHY doesn't CI have a pear channel? How are requests made? Can developers take their own initiative to do this, or does EllisLab need to be involved?

Yes, EllisLab is in full control of CodeIgniter. They take some cues from the community, but ultimately make the decisions as to what CI is and becomes.
Every update to CI thus far has had a relatively painless upgrade path. Automation would be nice, but I don't know that it is a MUST
