My experience is that enabling querystrings switches URLs from segments to querystrings. Is that not the case? Is that really a reasonable suggestion to abandon CodeIgniter due to one flaw?

Why are you so anti-querystrings? They are properly used to implement queries. Many web sites use them. Maybe you have heard of Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc? We need more people requesting querystring support try to get it to happen.
