I agree your generated thumb image quality sucks.
Try doing a search on "image quality" or "thumb quality", there has been numerous threads on this subject.

normally, my resampled pictures are fine with 90% quality... but I am using GD2...
so, it´s possible that it´s a problem with your GD .... I´ve read now that the GD1 has problems with resampling of realcolor pics...
so try to use GD2...
