My friend is hosting a CI app I wrote on godaddy and is not happy with their response time.
He wants to move the site to a faster hosting provider.

Hostgator or Mediatemple. They're cheap but have the best support you could ever dream of. I moved from Hostgator recently and I have nothing but nice things to say about them. Hostgator have the fastest and best technical support for a low price.
Mediatemple is also good at support, but takes a little longer to answer support tickets. Both hosts are ones that I would recommend, but Hostgator is easily the best, but Meditemple I find have better uptime and are much better server performance wise.

Faster pages or faster customer support? For the former, eck no not Godaddy.
I've had good experiences (both the service and the support) with EngineHosting. Currently using Site5 for small things, it seems to be going well.

You could take a look at CloudIgniter, which specialises in hosting CodeIgniter apps.

I am also using a CloudIgniter on a site. It was stared by one of the members on the boards. So far no complaints. Even the cheap 4.50/mo gets you shell access. They have been nice enough to install some common packages like subversion and mercurial. I haven't tried git, but I am sure it's installed.

I'm using Hosting 24 Cheap (under $8.00 for month-to-month on their silver plan, I forget what the gold plan runs for but still less than $20 - and less than $5.00 a month for 3 years paid in advance). That includes available domain name registration excellent and rapid 24/7 customer support. Full cPanel. Gold plan has CLI (not with silver though). Lots of security features and Apache/Zend support. They've just upgraded their servers, so even faster response times. PHP 5.3+ and so on.
