Rather than deleting your post and the thread... how about sharing with the community how you solved it? Isn't that what it's all about in the forums?

ummm... ok.
when trying to access files from outside the web root and passing a php variable make sure you use "/path/$variable" instead of '/path/$variable' or it won't work.
.. hows that?
I removed the post because it was dumb noob mistake and realized it 5 seconds after posting.
