nettuts plus Calendar - El Forum - 04-05-2011

Hello guys,
I am rather new to codeIgniter
I am currently working on an assignment that needs an editable calendar for admin and just the view for users.
I downloaded the tutorial from net.tutsplus.com on building a calendar, most of it is working fine but I cant get the text to display in the calender.

I have downloaded the source code and it should be working. Haven't touched it at all.
Initially i was recoding to the video tutorial but as it didnt work i had to try the fully finished source code.
If anyone can see a bug in it or have any idea why it wont display please let me know.
When i hard coded some values into the date they did appear
