First, learn PHP, You do need to know it reasonably well before attempting to use a PHP framework like CI.
Then read the User Guide (it is part of your downloaded installation).
Use the latest version (2.1.2 as of today).
Do the example application in the User Guide.
If (when) you run into problems, ask questions on these fora.
