Avatar Designer?

Hi all, does anyone know of an existing method/plugin/add-on/extension for a user to create their own avatar without having to use pre-designed ones? Thanks!

Isn't an avatar really just an upload picture and crop to size, unless you are talking about the fancy patterns for avatars I see on some forums?
