Thanks for the advice - I know about and have used HTTP headers, I just haven't used them extensively, and not in this scenario.

I've just implemented now a 401 header on requests which are sent while not logged in/expired, which my JS detects and prompts the user accordingly/redirects them.

It's working well now!
