general database question

I am having to go back and work on an old project of mine (pre-codeigniter booo). While looking through it and going through the code I got to wondering something. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to the different PHP MySQL fetch commands? Like, would there be any reason for using fetch_assoc instead of fetch_array and so on? Just wondering.. Hoping I can talk this customer into letting me do a little redesign and start using CodeIgniter. Pray for me
