bad initial output

I recently re-wrote my simple website in CI.
On my local dev machine (ubuntu LAMP) everthing is fine.
When I moved it to my host (hostgator) everything is fine
EXCEPT I'm getting three extra chars at the start of my
html output.

I'm stumped!
