Do you use database client compression?

I've been playing around with the compress and stricton database config options and wondered if anyone has done benchmarks on the compress setting. In our setup the DB is a separate VPS inside a VPC (Amazon RDS, MySQL compliant). For most of our customers the biggest listing page data sets aren't likely to be huge (few hundred records) but we have a few that are 10x+ that. The main area of the app pulls large TEXT columns very regularly.

CPU on the DB VPS's isn't generally an issue for us. I've searched around and can only find out-dated or anecdotal posts that generally recommend you turn it on if your web and DB servers aren't on the same box. Has anyone done any hard numbers on record set sizes and the benefits of client compression?
