No output with logging enabled

I've just dealt with a request where someone wanted to know why they were getting blank pages from the server.

The solution was that logging was enabled, but the directory wasn't writeable.

It's a mistake I made in the past, and it took me quite a while to figure out what was going wrong.

Would it be possible to add a few lines of code to the Log constructor that will throw an error if the logs directory isn't writeable or perhaps add it to the installation documentation?
