Agreed. Maybe a better approach, if possible, would be to check the URI and search for it against the array of declared routes. Maybe using in_array? Then if it isn't, log the the 404 error in a database with the requested URI. When Google sees that 404 code, I believe that your domain/site will, in a matter of words, get a "reputation" for having a bad link and page rank will go down. With my way, at least the user gets directed to a valid page. I guess another option would be to use the "(:any)" custom route to redirect to a "Were you looking for...." page.
