Secure file server / downloads?

I currently have a site that has products for sale, like software. The files currently are a secure download based on a few things, and the files are stored above httpdocs/web area. I am curious, has anyone ever done something like this, but have the files come from a different server box? I am looking to move our products/downloads to a new box, basically a sort of file server for this content. I am curious what sort of approaches/methods someone might have done to get this to work, be secure and not show where the file is coming from?

From my understanding, a lot of people use Amazon S3, since storage is fairly cheap.

Well my issue is not the actual space, but more of how can I communicate with another server to get the files. For example if the files are above the httpdocs on a different server than my shop, I am just trying to understand how can I do all this behind the scenes in php. Curious if anyone has ever done this, for example even if getting the files from a amazon storage, hidden secure files you know.
