Need help with url aliases in .htaccess (mod_rewrite)

It seems like it should be simply, but it's not

RewriteRule http://localhost/twci/index.php/continents/index/Europe http://localhost/twci/Europe

The rewrite_module shows that it is enabled. Am I leaving something out?

i assume .htaccess is supposed to be in the root directory.
