shared code base Installation Help

I am trying to setup CI so i can use one code base to run CI on multiple Apache virtual servers on a linux box runing WHM/CPanel. Right now i have it set up so when you create a new site it copies all of CI into the public_html folder for that site. What i would like to do is have one installation of CI codebase that all sites shared with the exception of the application and cache dir. I have tried a few things but just getting all kinds of permissions errors even when I set the permissions to 777(which is not ideal). can anyone out there help me out with this?

turns out once i change the permissions to 755 it worked fine ... go figure

yeah that link gave me a laugh too.
