Yeah I know, wasn't best impressed with that at all.
I also thought it was pretty weird of CodeIgniter to not throw an error from the DB driver/class! Instead it must have failed and thus the session class then failed.
But I guess the moral of the story is, enable logging in config.php and look through those logs! If I had did that earlier, I would have noticed the "mysql_pconnect disable due to security" errors and the "database connection failed" message. *Facepalm*
I just fixed it in the end by switching to the mysqli driver.
