Date > then today?

I have a db table with a date field.
The dates are stored as "date" type in this format : 2011-01-14

I'm trying to-do a select dates where date > today
so it will only show dates after today, I can't get it to work though
even if i hardcore date > 2011-01-13 the 14th dosn't show up?

thoughts?
