Database error out of nowhere

I'm getting a Unable to connect to your database server using the provided settings. error out of no where and am unsure how to resolve this. Has this happened to anyone else before?

Dumb your database connection settings and see if you can connect mnaually

Is this a remote or local server?
Have you tried to connect using another program (phpmyadmin, webmin, etc.)?
If these fail, check your db configuration settings (I know, but it's SOP to ask the question).
Show your db setting here, and someone may recognize a problem.
Did you make any changes before just before it failed?

If you're using an online web host, check if they changed something, also. Sites don't just break for no reason - something had to of changed.
