CodeIgniter 4 - Roadmap Process
#1

The CodeIgniter council members have been following the community suggestions and feedback regarding CodeIgniter 4 Smile

We have been experimenting with some of the ideas, and doing research/homework. We have made a few comments or asked for clarification on a couple of items, but by and large have tried to "stay out of the way". It is now time for us to chime in, and share some of our thoughts and conclusions!

This thread is *not* the roadmap, but rather our plan for building the roadmap for CodeIgniter 4. The CI4 discussion has been going on for some weeks now, and we think there will be enough feedback and dialog for the council to start drafting the proposed CI4 roadmap during the second half of May, with a target publication date of June 1st.

We have chosen to split the CI4 features and issues into three groups, each of which will be addressed in a separate thread: essentials, important and deferable. The "essentials" are those features and issues that need to be decided in order to come up with a preliminary roadmap, and which will dictate or influence the others. The "important" are those features and isses that need to be decided in order to start building the CI4 framework pieces. The "deferable" are those features and issues that can be addressed during development.

Some things that we have decided, and which are not negotiable: unit testing, and documentation. Contibutions of source code only will need those pieces added before consideration!

We welcome your comments, but please stay on topic! This thread is about the roadmap process. If you try to hijack the thread, or post non-relevant items that should be or that are dealt with elsewhere, your posts will be deleted without notice. We may post additional comments in feature/issue specific threads.

Perhaps some monthly info updates about next CI will be good idea.
Just so people know that there wont be another 2-3 years wait time before the next major CI is out. Smile

Agreed as well, this way people don't think version 3 is the "last" version.
They will see and read that there is continuous work being done and the progress of that work. Perhaps even a blog of sorts (which gets external visibility and hopefully reposting Big Grin ). Let people know the direction it is headed and therefore people can reconsider it if they "left" and hopefully consider it if they are looking for a framework in the future.

It is creative work, and now, at the beginning, monthly reporting will be likely an obstacle. Discretion is better now, although people don't like it. It would be better developers' efforts to be focused on decision/architecture/code quality instead of communication.
