How do you i18n?

So what I’m asking is how do people cope with using basic strings like ‘Edit’, ‘Add’, ‘Delete’ etc. Do you use the CI language files or gettext?

I personally have a general_lang.php file with all the common stuff like that, and I autoload it for all the application. Then for module specific languages, I make a specific file like contact_lang.php for example.

I was either thinking to build a kind of "dictionary" in a DB table witch will store all words and phrases of the site, but I don't know if it will be a good thing, something like:
