The client is irrelevant since PHP only runs on the server. Regardless of which stack you use on the server the client will always be JS.

Which is why it's an unfair comparison.
I assumed you were talking about NodeJS from the get-go; you mentioned sockets.io later ...

No, it is simply far easier to use NodeJS for similar purposes, because that's what it is designed for.
Easier to work with by design, not the same thing as more efficient.
