"Always" and "never" in the context of CI includes its ownership by EllisLab, which I believe did not leave direction of the project to the community until it transferred the project to BCIT.

I think it's obvious that I was referring to the CI4 era - that's why I mentioned the Foundation.

All of CI4's design requirements were gathered by Jim - from the community - you can probably look for a thread on that. From that point on, Lonnie worked hard on the framework, with help from Jim and others. After the official release, the community stepped in and, with more or less Lonnie's involvement, made the project what it is today.

It's been almost 5 years now, and the framework is in stable form.

Just to quickly put on my armchair lawyer’s hat: ‘CodeIgniter’ is a collection of intellectual assets, including the name, the code, this website, and perhaps a few other things. Interestingly, there are many organisations already using the flame logo, so I don’t think it’s owned by anyone here.

Committees don’t really mean much from a legal perspective. If you’re a member of some CodeIgniter committee, then I’m delighted for you. I'm not questioning anybody's integrity. However, unless I’m very much mistaken, I don’t think being a member of a committee equates to some kind of ownership.

Where the rubber meets the road is when we talk about intellectual assets such as this website and - in particular - the domain name.

Somebody out there has paid real money to have the domain name ‘codeigniter.com’ renewed.

Does anyone know who that person is?
