Indeed. You guys have been a great help. To be honest, I don't know yet if performance will really be a problem, so I'll just save the optimizing for later (as usual).

@Matt: Would you care to elaborate on what you don't like about RoR? I'm planning try it for a private project because I find it quite interesting and heard a lot of good things about it.

The code layout(MVC) is wonderful. The actual language is not suited for web development at all.
There is a revealing blog post about the Rails community and an O'Reilly post about php vs ruby.
Overall php is much more stable, and faster.

I think some people just love Ruby so much that they work around the stability and performance issues. I don't really have an opinion on it because I've never used Ruby on Rails or just vanilla Ruby. I've landed with PHP because it was easy to learn (coming from Perl) and it is so widely available on the cheap hosting plans that I can actually afford!
