hmmm .. looks like a lot of javascript, couldn't really write a PHP/CI library for it.

Gears is meant to keep an application working without internet connection so this is a client side extension. Because it's client side you can't expect everyone to have php installed so javascript is the main programming language to connect to the gears internals.
