I can't help with this error as I have never come across it, I was simply suggesting some extra debug steps and letting you know what sort of things people would need to help out. Best of luck with this problem.

The last time I got this error message (albeit not on a CI install), it turned out to be because the register_globals setting in my php.ini had changed. I can't recall why or how it had changed, or whether it had changed from 'off' to 'on' or the other way round, but that was the cause of the problem in my case.
