Why wasn't I told about this earlier?

If anyone doesn't know what it is... it's that thing that is everywhere and awesome --> http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/

... I hope it doesn't run TOO slow as i'm assuming it's probably a bit large.

Oh look a guide on the wiki Smile http://codeigniter.com/wiki/TinyMCE/

*sigh*

You'd be better off using something else, I had a few problems with intergrating TinyMCE into CodeIgniter. Besides that it appears to crap out horrible HTML.

hmmm i might try it at least, worstpress uses it and it seems noob friendly enough. I'll probably just strip out 90% of the conctrols and just leave a few things like bold/italic/underline/list and a few other essentials.

The quality of the HTML isn't the only problem. There's nothing stopping the user sending you ill-formated HTML, so you should always be checking the user input before inserting it into the database. I use (or will be using) HTMLPurifier for this.

@Cro_Crx - It can be a bit fiddly to get the configuration the way you want it though it is worth persevering. There's a wealth of plugins out there and with the latest version it's possible to generate valid XHTML. Personally, I didn't have any CI specific issues with it. Let me know if you run into any probs...

@TheFuzzy0ne - Thanks for the link, looks like it could come in very handy

TinyMCE 2.x was horrible and I hated it with a strong passion. The 3.x branch is doing so much better I have actually integrated it into PyroCMS!

The HTML is pure enough and you can check it, encode it, clean it and everything else just using the config options in the wiki.

It's a massive heavyweight compared to scripts like NicEdit but it does the job ok.

NicEdit looks very nice, the only thing i don't like is that all the options aren't shaded until you select the text area. There an option you can set to remove this behaviour?

Yeah there is an option for that somewhere... Fuzzy had a thread (here) about that
