Moving DB Structure

We have a development server that pretty well mirrors our existing application server. The data is not the same, but it is structurally identical. As we make changes to the database structure on the development server, we want to automate the structural changes with out impacting the data in the existing live database. Most of our changes would not impact the data stored in the existing structure anyway as, for the most part, we are ammending the structure. Still, we want to automate a structure synchronization without impacting the live data. Can anyone point me to resources that can help build a synchronization app?
