index.php problem

Hi,
I have uploaded a htaccess file to remove the index.php from the URL and this works fine. However, it doesn't work on my local machine which is very frustrating for testing.

Does anybody have any ideas why this would be the case?

it could be something to do with the 'AllowOverride' settings in your httpd.conf
