Use of properties inside <tr> tags

I was advised not to use any properties inside <tr> tags because it can create problems in some browsers. Is that really so?

Usually. Older browsers will ignore a lot of things in the <tr> code, like background colors and whatnot. If you really need to apply styling to a <tr> tag, use Javascript. Otherwise it's easy to work around by styling other elements.
