Planning a Start Page

Hello all,

I have a start page that is currently a mix of PHP, jQuery, and 960.gs.

Essentially each category can expand already into buttons that let me quickly get to the page i want. By default web apps automatically stays open.

This page is a little project of mine; its time to take it a step forward.

Using codeigniter, I want to make the page even more dynamic. Providing a way to rearrange, add, and delete the elements. I wont have a need for accounts preferences because this is just for my usage.

So what I'm looking for is a suggestion of a way to store them. Should I change there views directly? Change data thats passed into the views? If its stored as backend data, what is the best way to store it? MySQL seems a bit like overkill does it not?
