Character encoding problem (i think....)

Hi all, were having a few problems with the British pound sign character in our app. Whenever we enter the pound sign into the database it gets converted into a question mark. It isn't the usual black diamond that you get when the browser doesn't understand a character. I cant see how i can stop it converting the character when i enter into the database. Our current character encoding in the website is western(ISO-8859-1) and the encoding in the database is latin1_swedish_ci

Any help would be appreciated.

My advice might be boring... but change to charset=utf-8. I'm quite convinced you'll get the pond working if you do.
