popen disabled by host - workarounds?

Hey folks,

I'm trying to send mail using the email class and I'm getting the following error in the log:
'popen() has been disabled for security reasons'
I take it this means that my host has disabled popen?
If so, can anyone suggest a workaround? And if not, what is the problem?

In case you are still trying to sort this out. The answer is to change the email setting from sendmail to phpmail (in Admin > Settings > Email Settings). If it still fails, try using SMTP, but you will need an email account.

Thanks mate. I actually installed phpmailer as a plugin and that sorted it out for me, probably because it uses phpmail.
