Benefits of an ORM?

Quick question really. What are the benefits of using an ORM? It is one of the things I am looking into in the new year and just wanted peoples opinions on it. What kind of applications is ORM best used on. How can it improve development etc?

I would greatly appreciate hearing peoples opinions on the topic.
