What is benchmark in sql?

i found that we can make search without using fulltext search,with the help of benchmark.But i dont know what are benchmark..and also not getting information about it online.Please reply me if you know the answer else tell me fastest was to create dating website profile search..(if fulltext then i have 6 parameters ,how should i search them in 6 columns in table?)
