Quote:PHP 4 end of life announcement
[13-Jul-2007]

Today it is exactly three years ago since PHP 5 has been released. In those three years it has seen many improvements over PHP 4. PHP 5 is fast, stable & production-ready and as PHP 6 is on the way, PHP 4 will be discontinued.

The PHP development team hereby announces that support for PHP 4 will continue until the end of this year only. After 2007-12-31 there will be no more releases of PHP 4.4. We will continue to make critical security fixes available on a case-by-case basis until 2008-08-08. Please use the rest of this year to make your application suitable to run on PHP 5.

For documentation on migration for PHP 4 to PHP 5, we would like to point you to our migration guide. There is additional information available in the PHP 5.0 to PHP 5.1 and PHP 5.1 to PHP 5.2 migration guides as well.

This is a quote from php.net. I find it strange that it had no reaction on the CI community. I realize that PHP4 will be around for some time even so, but shouldn't a CI 2.0 pure PHP5 be released? and maintained along with the the 1.x series for a time. I think that a pure PHP5 version of CI could make it more powerful, and it would be used more and more, besides, i expect clients to be asking explicitly for PHP5 development (and you can find a PHP5 host easy now).

What are your thoughts? Is this taken into account by the developers of CI?

Plenty of action and reaction on this already. Search the forum for the answers. The short version? CI will continue to support PHP 4.

Something thats always helpful to remember, CI isnt really much of a seperate project. It is a bi-product of the work that gets done for EE. They reuse as much code as possible so they dont have to maintain two seperate code repositries.

Two ways CI would have only PHP5 support:

1.) Kahona does it, they probably will
2.) EE does it, probably wont for a while

Either way, CI team do not do road-maps either so you wont get a solid answer :p
