xml helper: xml_convert() - Why does it convert dashes

Hi,

What is the reason that the xml_convert() helper function converts dashes to entities(-.

At least as far as i know, the dashes aren't reserved characters in xml, so I'm just wondering why it converts them, it just makes the xml a bit harder to read, manually.
