Does anyone know how to remove the index.php path in the browser???

Does anyone know how to remove the index.php path in the browser and put a .html or .php as default value along with the controller name that is selected. I have seen websites like that which has been built using codeigniter. And is there any special advantage by doing this related to path or anyhting else..??
