core/Loader.php does not get passed DB params

Trying the database class for the first time today and getting ye olde connection errors. Specifically, line 244 in core/Loader.php.

Double checked the configuration in database.php, yup, all good.

When I did some debugging, it appears that the database() function in core/Loader.php isn't being passed anything in the $params; the string is blank. So, it appears that CI isn't even properly fetching my database settings.

Has anybody run into this?
