if you want to build a social network i'll suggest something like this
orm+template = happy if not u'll hit your head against the wall sometimes i know that becouse i've create voteoye.com (it's a social network around polls).

good luck with it but don't make the same mistake like use template sistem and a strong ORM else you'll end writing tons of lines of code (but this will help you even better to understand CI better, from mistakes we LEARN)
