Best Way to Crop User Photos

So I'm building a photo gallery that let's users upload their own photos. On my home page, I have a query that loops through the top rated photos for the last five days. The problem is that the template I bought for the site uses the landscape type layout to display the photos.(wider than it is high). I figured cropping the photo would be the best way to fix this error to help maintain quality of the photo. How do you think I should go about cropping the photo from the both the horizontal and vertical center of the photo?
