Ok, well thank you guys for all your help. I'm seeing if I can run it on Dreamhost now, and that seems to be coming with its own unique challenges...
As far as Ning, I do see sqlite mentioned on the phpinfo page, but their content store is something homegrown. Basically it lets you easily create an unlimited number of persistent objects which can have an arbitrary structure, can reference one another, and can be easily manipulated through php. Awesome really, but if you want to move your data to any other storage environment you'll probably have to redesign your schema and likely rewrite some code.
