Codeigniter and Quickbooks - Lazy web

I'm starting a new project for a friend that needs to have a store and the store tie into Quickbooks, I'm unsure where to even begin looking for how these two things even tie together. Has anyone had any experience or can point me in the correct direction with this?

I'm going to be doing something similar in the near future, although I will only be targeting open source accounting packages.

My current thinking is generating OFX/QFX files, but I'd be interested if anyone else has any thoughts?
