Default controller best practice

Hi there

im new to ci and am trying to build an elearning application. my question now is related to the homepage/default controller.

what is best practice for the default controller? the idea is, that the default controller loads some other controllers (the top navigation, the side navigation) which have to be populated by sql-query (so there is definitely a need for m, v and c there)

can you give me a hint on this? if you need more info, i will answer your questions.
