Custom subdomain for each username?

I currently read THIS ARTICLE, aiming to achieve a unique subdomain for each user, but what I ended up with was confusion.

My current setup is running Ion Auth; what I've gathered is I need ALL subdomains to reroute to my front page while passing along the subdomain variable which will then redirect to the custom subdomain if the username exists. correct? Or am I completely off?

Does anyone know of someone that has done this? or how to do it?
